Middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane has been under the scanner after a dismal tour against Sri Lanka. Sourav Ganguly, however, felt that the right-handed batsman’s poor form is not a concern for the team ahead of the South African series.

The right-handed Rahane has only scored 17 runs in the five innings against Sri Lanka at home, despite the rest of the team performing well. While the likes of Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay have shined bright in the series, Rahane has faced the heat for his dismal start to the series.

Rahane has been the vital cog in the Indian batting line-up, bringing his ‘A’ game when the country needs. However, the recent failure has had the critics talking about the right-hander’s inclusion in the playing XI.

“No, I don’t think Ajinkya Rahane’s form is a concern as he is a quality player. Virat Kohli, Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay have all been to South Africa. The best thing is that they are going back to South Africa as better players,” Ganguly was quoted on TOI during an interaction on the sidelines of Ranji Trophy semi-final between Bengal and Delhi.

The bowling attack and Hardik Pandya:

Ganguly was further impressed with the bowling-attack but is waiting for their performance in South Africa.

“We will find out if this is the best bowling attack or not. They have got pace for sure. Umesh has pace, Bhuvneshwar is in good form, so let’s wait,” he said.

The inclusion of Hardik Pandya was one of the crucial points picked up in the interaction. The former Indian skipper suggested that the all-rounder must be included only in case there is a flat-track while saying that Rohit Sharma must be picked up on green wickets.

Who must open alongside Vijay, Ganguly?

Further, he addressed the topic of openers. While for the longest time KL Rahul has been avoided by the management, the left-hander firmly believes that Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay must continue at the top of the order.

“India is a good team but it won’t be easy that much I can tell you. If the batsmen put up runs on the board, this attack can get wickets,” he concluded.
