Pakistan have turned their Champions Trophy around by qualifying for the finals for the first time ever. They were the underdogs and fought against the odds to come this far in the event. Their campaign wasn’t off to the best of starts when they were beaten by India comprehensively at Edgbaston by 124 runs on June 4.
Their excitement went through the roof when they upset England in the semifinals beating them in a lopsided contest by 8 wickets at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The stage is set for a mouth-watering final between India and Pakistan on Sunday at the Oval after the defending champions mauled Bangladesh in the semifinals of Thursday. India and Pakistan have faced off before in the tournament at Edgbaston where the Kohli-led India emerged victoriously.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is commentating in the ongoing competition in the UK and was also present for the Pakistan-England semifinal. Soon after Pakistan completed the win, their fans were seen celebrating all around the ground. Sarfaraz Khan, in honour of their fans, acknowledged the fans after the famous win was scripted.
Ganguly surrounded by Pakistan fans
After completing his job, Ganguly headed home in his car which was soon mobbed by Pakistan fans. India hadn’t played the semifinals till then but because they were going to face Bangladesh, fans in both countries had already assumed an Indo-Pak final post Pakistan’s win. Fans were waving their country’s flags in front of Ganguly’s car in order to give a message that they will win the finals on Sunday.
Such a behaviour isn’t ideal against someone of Ganguly’s stature. At the end of it, it is just a game of cricket and both teams do their best on the day. India, on current form, looks the heavier side compared to their counterparts but still need to play well on the day as Pakistan will offer tough competition on Sunday.
