Sourav Ganguly names six Indian cricketers who helped him leave a legacy for the future generations

Sourav Ganguly, the legendary cricketer, recently said how happy was to form India into a team, which has the ability to win, both at home and abroad. In 2000, he was appointed as Team India’s captain after the side was reeling from the aftermath of the match-fixing scandal. From there, he changed the face of cricket in the country, becoming one of India’s greatest captains.

Ganguly, who’s also the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has named six players, he was happy to bring forth during his stint. The 47-year-old was satisfied with his stint as the national leader after being able to leave a rich legacy for the generations to follow.

“That (2011 World Cup-winning team) team had seven or eight players who started their careers under me. The likes of (Virender) Sehwag, Dhoni himself, Yuvraj (Singh), Zaheer (Khan), Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra,” Ganguly was quoted as saying while speaking in an online interactive session with Unacademy.

“So, I think that’s a legacy which I was extremely happy to leave behind as a captain. And that was my biggest legacy that I left a side which had the ability of winning at home and away from home,” Ganguly stated.

Ganguly also went down the memory lane and said how he wished for MS Dhoni to lift the 2011 World Cup. The veteran, who made India the runners-up in the 2003 World Cup, told that on the historic night at the Wankhede Stadium, he was happy to see Dhoni pull off the heist against Sri Lanka.

“I remember I was at the Wankhede Stadium that night and I came down from the commentary box to watch Dhoni and the team go around the ground. In 2003 the team which I was the captain lost the final to Australia, so I was so happy to see Dhoni have the opportunity to win that trophy,” the Prince of Kolkata added.

Ganguly captained Team India in 49 Tests and 149 ODIs, leading them to 21 and 76 victories respectively. With the bat, the Kolkata-born churned out over 18,000 runs with 38 centuries and 107 fifties to show for his efforts.
