Sourav Ganguly opines that MS Dhoni could have been a better Test captain
The former India cricketer believes that Dhoni should have continued as Test skipper for a while longer.
MS Dhoni is considered India’s best ODI captain of all time, and probably the second best in the world after Ricky Ponting. His captaincy in the longest format too saw some great records, including taking India to the no. 1 ICC Test rankings. However, some pundits also believe that Dhoni the Test captain was not up to the mark, and could have achieved a lot more than he did. The latest to join this bandwagon is former India captain Sourav Ganguly.
Not satisfied with Dhoni’s Test captaincy records?
Sourav Ganguly, who was himself a world-class leader, has also played under Dhoni’s captaincy. In an interview to NDTV, the Prince of Kolkata, as he is fondly called, was asked to pick the Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni as the better captain. In his response, Ganguly said that it was difficult to compare, but Dhoni the Test captain could have done better.
“Very difficult to compare, although MS (Dhoni) has been fabulous. MS in the shorter format has been a remarkable captain, fantastic record, may be in the Test format he should have done a bit better,” opined the southpaw who is now the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
“Virat (Kohli) has got the capabilities of becoming a very very good captain, but for me, the greatest captain is Steve Waugh,” Ganguly added.
However, In March 2013, Dhoni had become the most successful Indian Test captain when he went past Sourav Ganguly’s record of 21 victories from 49 Tests. Back then, Ganguly had praised his successor on the feat and had also called him the all-time greatest captain of India.
Sudden retirement in 2014
On Dec 30, 2014, Dhoni shocked the cricket fraternity with his announcement to retire from Test cricket following the drawn Test against Australia at the MCG. In January 2017, he put down his papers as the limited-overs captain too but continues to play in the two shorter formats.
