Sourav Ganguly picks the future player of Indian cricket
The former Indian captain also believed that he will key for India in Tests.
Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricketer, wants Rishabh Pant to don the gloves during India’s upcoming limited-overs matches ahead of Dinesh Karthik. Team India is playing without MS Dhoni in the ongoing T20I series against the Windies and will do the same in Australia as well. But Karthik was seen wicketkeeping in Kolkata T20I on Sunday which left everyone surprised.
Ganguly believes that Pant is the future of Indian cricket and he should be handed over more responsibility. He also went on to say that the youngster will only learn after playing more matches and given that he is the preferred wicketkeeper in Test matches now, he should also be taking over in the limited-overs format. However, Ganguly didn’t undermine Karthik saying that he should play as a specialist batsman in the team.
He will be key in ODIs too
“Rishabh Pant should be played as a wicketkeeper-batsman, while Dinesh Karthik should play only batsman’s role. Because Pant is our Test wicket-keeper and as time passes, he will be our key player in ODIs too. It necessary that he should be given responsibility to keep the wicket.
“Pant is our future and he will play for a longer time for India. We witnessed it in Test cricket that in last 2-3 Test matches, he batted extremely well and right now he may be the best wicketkeeper-batsman we have,” Sourav Ganguly said while speaking to India TV.
Meanwhile, Karthik didn’t do any harm to his chances in the series opener against the Windies. Being the specialist behind the wickets, he was clinical and also played a match-winning patient knock in the low-scoring encounter. He came out to bat with India in all sorts of trouble at 45/4 and remained unbeaten until the end on 31 off 34 balls with three fours and a solitary maximum.
The second T20I will be played on Tuesday now in Lucknow at the Ekana Stadium as the hosts will look to seal the three-match series.
