Sourav Ganguly has a question for Ravi Shastri and Rohit Sharma

Sourav Ganguly, the legendary former Indian cricketer, is of the opinion that cricket is a completely different game than football and the captain should take more responsibility in the illustrious sport. Moreover, he also said that the coach should take a backseat in cricket.

Recently, the 46-year-old went to the Symbiosis International (Deemed University) in order to launch his book ‘A Century is Not Enough’ co-authored with renowned sports journalist Gautam Bhattacharya. During the event, Dada talked about the coach and the captain’s role.

“It is not like football. A lot of current cricket coaches think that they are going to run a cricket team like a football team, but cricket is a captain’s game and coach has to take a backseat and that is important,” Ganguly remarked.

I backed them because I saw them closely

Ravi Shastri is the current head coach of the national team while Rohit Sharma is the captain for the ongoing Asia Cup in the UAE. When asked about the questions, he would wish to ask the duo if given a chance, Ganguly said: “Who picks up the team, Rohit Sharma (stand-in ODI captain) or Ravi Shastri.”

During Ganguly’s stint as the skipper of the Indian team, a number of players including the likes of Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, and Yuvraj Singh flourished and went on to become fulcrums of the team. Ganguly also talked about the reasons for backing them while saying that India’s all-format captain Virat Kohli needs to figure out who can fit the bill going into the future.

“Virat (Kohli) needs to work little on it. I backed them because I saw them closely, I have seen them how they react to pressure,” he added.

In the ongoing Asia Cup, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh haven’t quite put their best foot forward thus far and throwing light on their indifferent shows, Ganguly said, “I think it is just a phase and they will get back on the track. They are strong teams.”
