The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come to an end and the focus now completely shifts on the upcoming World Cup to be played in England. During the T20 tournament, all the teams announced their preliminary squads for the mega event. India also did the same while leaving out Rishabh Pant who was plying his trade for the Delhi Capitals. The young wicketkeeper-batsman is known for his swashbuckling abilities and many felt the selectors missed a trick by not picking him.
Dinesh Karthik was preferred ahead of him as he is more experienced and apart from Kedar Jadhav’s injury, there are no concerns whatsoever for the team. However, Sourav Ganguly, who worked as an advisor of the Capitals in the IPL, feels that the Men in Blue will miss Pant during the World Cup.
Rishabh Pant won a few matches single-handedly for his team during the IPL and his most memorable knock came against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the eliminator. His 49-run knock off 21 balls helped DC win the thriller by two wickets and once again calls for Pant’s inclusion increased. He ended up with 488 runs to his name in 16 matches which are more than decent.
Highlighting the same, Sourav Ganguly, while speaking to the reporters on Monday, reckoned that a player like Rishabh Pant should’ve been there in India’s squad. “India will miss Pant in the World Cup. I don’t know in whose place but he will be missed,” he was quoted as saying by Times Now.
What chief selector had said?
Rishabh Pant, by no means, was overlooked or ignored according to the chief selector MSK Prasad. He had praised the youngster and have also kept Pant in the standby list. “All of us felt that either Pant or Kartik will only come into playing XI if Mahi is injured. If it is a crucial match, wicket-keeping also matters, so that is the only reason why we went ahead with Dinesh Karthik otherwise Rishabh Pant was almost there,” Prasad had said during the squad announcement.
