Indian veteran speedster Ashish Nehra announced his retirement from international cricket ahead of the final T20I between India and Australia in Hyderabad. One of the most successful India bowlers, Nehra has played under seven different captains in a career that spanned over 18 long years. He had his fair share of injuries but being a tough character, Nehra always made a comeback into the national side.

The 38-year old will always be known for taking India to the famous victory against England during the 2003 world cup match in Durban. Defending 250, Nehra scalped his career-best figures of 6/23 in that game. India finished runners-up during that year but Nehra ticked the box eight years later in the 2011 World Cup.

“It is always good to retire when people are asking why than why not,” Nehra told reporters in Hyderabad. “I have spoken to the team management as well the chairman of selection committee that the game against New Zealand has come in Delhi. So it can’t get bigger than retiring in front of your home fans where I played my first Ranji Trophy game 20 years ago,” added the Indian pacer.

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, under whom Nehra played a lot of cricket, tweeted after hearing the pacer’s decision to hang up his boots. The former skipper played a key-role in Nehra’s career. Just like the case of Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh among many; Ganguly backed a young Ashish Nehra to do well at the international level. And on the bowlers part, Nehra delivered when it mattered.

Nehra has so far scalped 235 wickets from 163 international outings at a decent rate. Ganguly tweeted ” @BCCI well done ashish Nehra ..tuff character ..played with so much injuries ..very very good bowler ..enjoy ur retirement” Meanwhile, India will take on Australia in the final T20I in Hyderabad tonight.
