South Africa all-rounder Vernon Philander announces retirement from all forms of international cricket

It has been a topsy-turvy journey for Cricket South Africa this year. It has rather been a forgetful year for the Proteas as they have failed to deliver any daunting performances throughout 2019. However, with Graeme Smith at the helm as the director of cricket, South Africa is expected to rediscover themselves and bounce back on the international stage next year.

Amid the rebuilding process of Cricket South Africa, all-rounder Vernon Philander has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket at the end of the Test series against England in January 2020. In an impeccable international career, the 34-year-old scored 1619 runs in 60 Tests for South Africa. He also has 216 wickets to his name in Tests including an impressive record of 13 five-wicket hauls and two 10-wicket hauls.

In a career that spanned over more than 12 years, Philander made his ODI debut against Ireland in 2007. The right-hander has donned the coloured jersey for South Africa in 30 matches where he has gathered 151 runs and 41 wickets. Philander was recently seen playing for Cape Town Blitz under the leadership of Quinton de Kock in the MSL 2019.

Vernon Philander registered the figures of 8/78 against Australia

Philander marked his arrival to the Test cricket in style as he scalped 51 wickets in his first seven matches. His accomplishment helped him earn the 2012 SA Cricketer of the Year accolade at that year’s Cricket South Africa annual awards. One of the highlights of Philander’s playing career was when he registered figures of 8/78 in his Test debut against Australia, dismantling the hosts at a score of 47 runs.

“I want to give thanks to my Heavenly Father for blessing me with the opportunity to represent my country for the last 12 years. It has been an honour and privilege to have played alongside the very best in the game,” said Philander while announcing his departure from the game.

Graeme Smith also lauded Philander’s determination and his character after the all-rounder announced his decision to bid adieu to international cricket. “One of the many things that have stood out for me with Vern is his character, his determination and the way that he has always been up for a fight and a challenge has shown the heart of the man,” said Smith.
