South Africa announce squad for Pakistan T20Is; Heinrich Klaasen to lead

South Africa have named a second-string T20I squad for their upcoming series against Pakistan. Most of their players would be leaving Pakistan soil after the conclusion of the Test series in order to prepare for the home Tests against Australia. For the upcoming T20Is, starting Thursday, February 11, Heinrich Klaasen has been named as the skipper.

The Proteas’ home series against the Aussies still awaits an official confirmation though. In the 18-man squad for the Pakistan T20Is, there are three uncapped players- fast bowler Okuhle Cele, wicketkeeper Ryan Rickleton and batsman Jacques Synman.

South Africa focussing on T20 World Cup

Despite not having the most experienced squad for the upcoming T20Is, Victor Mpitsang, South Africa’s convenor of selectors, isn’t concerned. With the 2021 edition of the World Cup ahead, the team management is looking to try out youngsters. He feels that it’s an apt opportunity for the youngsters to show their mettle at the highest level.

“It’s a big year for T20 international cricket, with the World Cup coming up and this is the ideal opportunity for youngsters to put their hands up and grab opportunities, however they may come,” Mpitsang was quoted as saying.

“We are excited to see what these youngsters will do under what won’t be the easiest of conditions, but more than that, we as a panel, are looking forward to seeing the more experienced players step up as leaders and take ownership of the team,” he stated.

South Africa’s T20I squad:

 Heinrich Klaasen, Nandre Burger, Okuhle Cele, Junior Dala, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, George Linde, Janneman Malan, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lutho Sipamla, Jon-Jon Smuts, Pite van Biljon, Glenton Stuurman, Jacques Snyman

The Pakistan’s women’s team is also set to lock horns with the South Africa women’s team in three ODIs and as many T20Is, starting Wednesday, January 20. All the matches will take place at the Kingsmead in Durban.

The men’s team will play the Tests in Karachi and Rawalpindi followed by the T20Is at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The Proteas men’s team is ranked fifth in the ICC rankings for T20I teams. Pakistan are placed fourth.
