South Africa cricketers on the brink of being slapped with fines and jail-time

Since the 2015/16 domestic match-fixing scandal involving a few South Africa players, the developments have not only gone ahead and destroyed these players’ careers, but the fact of the matter is that they are now facing issues with either jail time or perhaps even a fine for bail, something that was certainly not expected to say the least.

Last year, former South African batsman Ghulam Bodi had pleaded guilty when the case against him stated that he was indeed the middleman between the fixers and the players during the domestic league. Dolphins players Thami Tsolekile and Lonwabo Tsotsobe were the ones who were brought into the net initially before the likes of Alviro Petersen and Jean Symes were next to follow.

Gulam Bodi was hit with a 20-year ban after admitting to serving as an intermediary between fixers and players, Thami Tsolekile (12 years), Pumelela Matshikwe (10), Ethy Mbhalati (10), Jean Symes (7) and Alviro Petersen (2) have subsequently admitted their part in the affair and received bans.

Alviro Petersen, a former opener for South Africa went on to be slapped with just the two years and will be one of the few who will escape these two massive reparations given the fact that he was somewhat of a whistle blower in the ordeal. However, despite all of this, they all have their bans handed out to them, something that will see them play little or no cricket to be played in recent times.

Vaughan van Jaarsveld and Craig Alexander were the ones to report this ordeal as whistle blowers, however, it was Alviro Petersen who revealed that he had indeed participated in some of the meetings with the fixers as part of the Dolphins franchise in the Ram Slam T20.
