India Under-19s will prepare for the Under-19 World Cup to start next month with a 3-match Youth ODI series against the hosts South Africa Under-19s. They will later involve in a U19 Quadrangular series involving New Zealand and Zimbabwe as 3rd and 4th teams. Most of the players in the current Indian U19 team have already played at senior level. On the other hand, the South Africa U19s suffered a 0-7 defeat against Pakistan in a 7-match Youth ODI series at home.

All the key stats and numbers ahead of the 3-match Youth ODI series between South Africa and India:

0-7 – South Africa lost each of their last seven Youth ODI matches as Pakistan whitewashed them during the 7-match Youth ODI series at home in June-July this year. This is now the longest losing streak in Youth ODIs for South Africa Under-19s. They lost seven successive ODIs they played between 2014 and 2015.


10 – India Under-19s won each of their last 10 Youth ODIs they played on South African soil. Their streak began in 1998 U19 CWC and spanned across 12 years until 2010 which was the last times India U19s played in South Africa. Overall, India U19s won 12 out of 14 Youth ODIs they played in South Africa.


65.33Yashasvi Jaiswal is averaging 65.33 in Youth ODI cricket across 15 matches he played. Jaiswal scored 784 runs with help of two centuries and six fifties in those 15 innings.

Yashasvi has even better batting average in List A cricket. He scored 779 runs in 13 games at an average of 70.81 with three tons and three fifties including a double century.


78.42 – Jonathan Bird has amassed 549 runs across 8 matches in Youth ODI cricket at an average of 78.42. He struck three centuries and two fifties in those eight matches. During the series against Pakistan, he had scores of 75, 100 and 112 in three successive innings.


1163 – Top-order batsman N Tilak Varma aggregated 1163 runs across 27 innings in Under-19s games since 2018/19 season. He struck three hundreds and seven fifties in this period for various teams he represented at the U19 level. In 10 Youth ODIs, Tilak scored 310 runs at an average of 38.75 with help of a hundred and a fifty.


1801 – The India U19 skipper Priyam Garg has 1801 runs at an average of 50.03 across 42 matches he played in professional cricket (FC / List A / T20). He struck four hundreds including a first-class double ton and 11 half-centuries.


1998 – The East London’s Buffalo Park has hosted only one Youth ODI match – between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in 1998 U19 CWC. Zimbabwe were restricted to 137/9 while the Lankans needed 42 overs and lost 6 wickets to chase down the target.


2013 – The last instance of India U19s and South Africa U19s facing off in a Youth ODI game was back in 2013 – During the Quadrangular series hosted by India. The two teams faced off in only one bilateral Youth ODI series – During a 3-match series in 1996 which the home team, India U19s won 3-0.
