Bangladesh’s best performance on their South Africa tour came in the first T20I as they scored 175/9 but it couldn’t prevent their 6th International loss as they were chasing a daunting total of 196. With the contributions from Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers, the home side posted a big total. Bangladesh started off well in reply but lost wickets regularly in the middle overs and there was a bit too much left to be done in the end.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the game:

2 – Shakib Al Hasan and Mehedi Hasan opening the bowling in this T20I is only the 2nd instance in International cricket in South Africa where spinners bowled the first two overs of an International game. It was in the 1906 Johannesburg Test match that two South African spinners starting off against England.

4 – Number of South Africa players who scored more than 25 runs in this game. This is only the eight instance for South Africa where four of their players scored 25 and more runs in a T20I game. This is the 2nd such instance for them at home with the first one coming in the sole T20I at Bloemfontein against Zimbabwe in 2010 before this game.

4 – This game is only the 4th occasion where four South African bowlers picked up two wickets each in a T20I game. Four SA players picked two wickets each against Scotland in 2009 in The Oval, against New Zealand in Durban in 2012 and against Afghanistan in Mumbai in 2016.

5 – Number of times Shakib Al Hasan has led Bangladesh in T20I cricket so far. The Bangladesh side ended on the losing side in each of the five T20Is.

7 – This was AB de Villiers’ 7th Man of the Match award in T20I cricket. He won the last in the T20I against England at Johannesburg last year. De Villiers has a total of 26 Man of the Match awards in Twenty20 cricket.

44 – Number of catches AB de Villiers has taken as a fielder in T20I cricket. These are the most number of catches for a fielder in T20I format going past Ross Taylor’s 42. De Villiers has taken 21 catches as a wicketkeeper as well in this format.

62* – The partnership of 62* between Farhaan Behardien and David Miller is the 2nd highest for South Africa for the 5th wicket in T20Is. Behardien and Faf du Plessis shared a 66-run partnership against Windies in 2015 at this position.

175/9 – Bangladesh’s total of 175/9 is their 2nd highest in T20I cricket outside Asia. Their highest total in T20I format was 190/5 against Ireland in Belfast, 2012. In the previous four T20Is against South Africa, Bangladesh couldn’t reach the 150-run mark.
