South Africa sealed the 3-match ODI series against Australia with a game still to be played as they got better of the visitors by 6 wickets in Bloemfontein. Australia raced to 50 in 6.1 overs after electing to bat first. Three wickets in quick space left Australia in defensive mode from where they failed to recover. Aaron Finch and D’Arcy Short scored 69 runs apiece but were restricted to 271 with Lungi Ngidi bagging a 6-fer.

Quinton de Kock was dismissed for a duck in the very first over but Janneman Malan rescued the chase with an unbeaten ton. He finished unbeaten on 129 off 139 balls that included 7 fours and 4 sixes. Malan shared 80+ stands with JJ Smuts (41), Heinrich Klaasen (51) and David Miller (37) as South Africa completed their maiden series win in the 2019-20 home season with nine balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights from South Africa’s 6-wicket victory over Australia in Bloemfontein:

Yet another defeat for Australia in South Africa:

7 – Australia now has lost each of their last seven ODI matches on South African soil. In fact, the Proteas won ten of their last 11 ODI matches against the Aussies.

3 – South Africa now has won each of their last three bilateral ODI series against Australia. They won 5-match series in 2016 at home by 5-0 margin and the 3-match away ODI series in 2018 by 2-1 margin.

A century and 6-wicket haul in the same game

2 – Janneman Malan (129*) and Lungi Ngidi (6/58) became only the 2nd South African pair to score a century and pick up a 6-wicket haul in the same ODI match. Malan and Ngidi shared the player of the match award for this game. Hashim Amla (110) and Imran Tahir (7/45) recorded the first such instance for the Proteas during the 2016 Tri-Nation ODI series in West Indies.

A record hundred by Janneman:

3Janneman Malan is only the 3rd South African to score a century and claim three catches as a fielder in the same ODI match. Jacques Kallis during the 1999 Auckland ODI against New Zealand and Faf du Plessis during the 2017 Durban ODI against Sri Lanka scored 100 and 105 respectively where they took three catches as fielders.

129* – The unbeaten 129 by Janneman is the 3rd highest score by any player in an ODI where they took three catches as a fielder. Rohit Sharma scored 162 during the 2018 Brabourne ODI against West Indies while Ian Bell scored 141 during 2015 Hobart ODI also against Australia.

23y 321d – Janneman Malan, at the age of 23 years and 321 days, is now the 2nd youngest South African to score a century in an ODI chase. Quinton de Kock had three hundreds by this age including two tons in the successful chases.

A record haul for Ngidi:

6/58 – Lungi Ngidi’s 6/58 is now the 9th 6-wicket haul in a Men’s ODI for South Africa but the most expensive 6-fer among those nine. He is also the 2nd player to claim a 6-wicket haul against Australia for the Proteas in a Men’s ODI match after Makhaya Ntini (6/22 in 2006 Cape Town ODI).

26 – Lungi Ngidi, in 26 matches, became the fastest player to claim 50 wickets in ODI cricket for South Africa. The previous quickest to 50 ODI wicket for South Africa was Lonwabo Tsotsobe in 27 matches.

A rare big chase without a century stand and captain’s contribution for the Proteas:

272 – The chase of 272 by South Africa is their 2nd highest successful ODI chase without a century partnership. Their highest is 297 against India during the 2011 World Cup match in Nagpur.

3 – Only the 3rd time South Africa won an ODI match while chasing a target despite their captain bagging a duck. The 216-run chase against Australia (Hansie Cronje – 0 off 1 ball) in the 1996 Titan Cup and 154 against Pakistan (Graeme Smith – 0 off 1 ball) in the 2007 Johannesburg against Pakistan were other such instances.
