South Africa vs India, 2018: 1st T20I – Statistical Highlights

India continued their rich form in the limited-overs cricket by defeating the home side once again by a convincing 28-run win. India’s top order provided an explosive start banking on a quick-fire 39-ball 72 from Shikhar Dhawan. The start helped India to finish with 203/5 in their 20 overs which was easily defended by the Indian bowlers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took a 5-wicket haul that includes three wickets in his final over to restrict the hosts to 175/9.

1 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar is now the first Indian player and overall the 6th player to take a 5-wicket haul in all the three International format. The Indian pacer’s previous best figures were 3/9 that came on his debut.
2 – Number of 5-wicket hauls in the Twenty20 format for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. His first 5-wicket haul in T20s came during the 2017 IPL. Bhuvneshwar is now the 4th Indian to take multiple 5-fers in the Twenty20 format. Love Ablish, Amit Mishra and Jaydev Unadkat are the other three Indians to take two 5-fers in the T20s.
3 – The wicket of Virat Kohli was Tabraiz Shamsi’s maiden wicket in the T20I format. He featured in two T20I games previously without taking a wicket in the six overs he bowled.
4 – Dane Paterson (48 runs) and Junior Dala (47 runs) are the 4th opening pair to conceded 45+ runs in a T20I inning. England and Sri Lankan opening pairs conceded 45+ runs each in 2013 and 2016 respectively to Australia while Windies opening bowlers conceded 50+ runs each to New Zealand in the 2018 T20I.
5/24 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the 2nd Indian player and the first Indian pacer to take a 5-wicket haul in the T20I format. Yuzvendra Chahal bagged a 6-wicket haul in last year’s T20I against England.
27 – Shikhar Dhawan’s 27-ball fifty is the fastest among India’s six fifties in the T20I format against South Africa. Rohit Sharma brought up his fifty off 32 balls in the 2011 T20I in Durban which was the previous quickest.
47 – The 47 runs conceded by Junior Dala are the most by a South African on T20I debut. Wayne Parnell conceded 44 runs on his T20I debut in 2009 against Australia.
78/2 – India’s 78 runs in the mandatory powerplay are the most by them in the first six overs in a T20I. India scored 77/1 against Sri Lanka in the 2009 Nagpur T20I while chasing. India completing 100 by 8.2 overs is also the fastest for them in this format.
134 – Number of catches for MS Dhoni as a wicket-keeper in the Twenty20 format; the most by any player. Kumar Sangakkara took 133 catches behind the stumps in this format.
203/5 – India’s total of 203/5 in this game is their highest against South Africa in this format. India made 199/5 against them in the 2015 Dharamsala T20I. This is also the 2nd highest total in the SA-IND T20I games behind South Africa’s 219/4 during the previous meeting in 2012 at this venue.
