South Africa vs India 2018: Dale Steyn ruled out of the Test series
If there is a need for him to bat in the second innings, he will be available for it.
The Proteas are ahead in the first Test as the Indian batsmen failed to apply themselves and gave away their wickets cheaply. Barring Hardik Pandya, none of the other batsmen looked comfortable against the star-studded pace attack. The South African’s are fielding their strongest side since 2015. Injuries to one player or the other has affected South Africa quite a few times.
Dale Steyn is one of the most successful fast bowlers in the history of cricket. His ability to swing the ball along with his aggressive attitude is a treat to watch. However, Steyn’s career has been marred by injuries. Steyn has had persistent troubles with his right shoulder. After a 13-month long break, he recovered and featured in the first Test against India at the Newlands in Cape Town.
Limps off
Just when everything was going South Africa’s way, Steyn limped off the field having injured his heel. The management did not want to take any chance and he was rushed to the hospital for the scans. Steyn had taken two wickets and was bowling his 18th over when the incident occurred. Vernon Philander finished the over by bowling the three remaining deliveries.
Reports confirmed that he had hurt the heel tissue and that not only rules him out of the ongoing match but is expected to be out of action for the next four to six weeks.
South African coach Ottis Gibson did not want to rush Steyn to the big stage and wanted to manage his workload. It is very frustrating for a bowler to get injured in the midst of a good Test match. The team management also confirmed that if it is absolutely necessary he will be available to lend his support to the team with the bat otherwise he is out of the match.
