South Africa vs India, 2nd Test Day 1 Stats Review: Captain KL Rahul scores half-century, SA pacers bowl India out for 202
Can Mohammed Shami-led bowling attack bowl South Africa out cheaply again?
Marco Jansen took a back-to-back four-wicket haul as both Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier, who is playing his first Test since 2019, took three wickets each to bundle out India for 202 runs on the first day of the second Test at Johannesburg. KL Rahul, who captained India for the first time in international cricket scored fifty with Ravi Ashwin being the second-highest run-getter in the innings who scored 46 runs.
Earlier in the day, regular skipper Virat Kohli got ruled out of the Test match with a back spasm. Stand-in captain Rahul continued his fine form from the first Test as he got no support from other batters with experience and under pressure players, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane’s bad form extended in the New Year, as well as they, scored 3 and 0 runs respectively. It was the latter’s first golden duck in Test cricket.
In reply, the hosts lost the solitary wicket of Aiden Markram who gave away his wicket to Mohammed Shami for the third time in the series. Skipper Dean Elgar and promising batter Keegan Petersen remained not out on 11 and 14 respectively to trail India by 167 runs. The Proteas would hope to cut off the deficit quickly on the second day to take a lead over the visitors. India’s pacers will look to continue their form from the Centurion Test and try and restrict the South African team to the lowest score possible.
