Team India will have a point to prove as they take on South Africa in the first Test of the three-match series. The encounter, which is a Boxing Day clash, gets underway on December 26 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. The Virat Kohli-led team has been phenomenal in the longest format lately, having done well in England and Australia earlier this year.
Hence, many are backing them to make a mark against the Proteas team as well. Notably, South Africa is the only nation where India is yet to record a Test series win. Hence, the visiting team is chasing history this time around. It must be noted that South Africa haven’t been too well in recent years. In fact, the Proteas side has suffered home Test series defeat against England and Sri Lanka in recent years.
With India being the top-ranked Test team at the moment, the Proteas side is seen as underdogs for this series despite having the home advantage. Notably, India last toured South Africa back in 2018 where they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the Test series. However, that Proteas side had services of Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Morne Morkel, who are retired now.
The current Proteas side will be led by veteran opener Dean Elgar, who will be needed to lead from the front. He’ll be accompanied by the likes of Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock, who are also proven stars of this format. With Anrich Nortje missing this series due to fitness issues, the bowling attack seems to have gotten a bit weaker.
However, the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi have also upset many batters. As far as the Indian team is concerned, big guns like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are the players to watch out for.
Meanwhile, here’s is a look at how the weather is expected to play on day 1 of South Africa vs India first Test:
As per accuweather, temperature in Centurion will range between 16 and 26 degrees Celsius on Day 1 of the contest. Coming to the worrying part, rain is predicted over the next five days and we might witness several interruptions during the course of the Boxing Day clash.
