South Africa is currently engaged with Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series. The home team already won the five-match ODI series handsomely and the first T20I match proved to be a nail-biter. The low-scoring thriller had a lot of tense moments even as the Proteas took some interesting decisions. They even ‘choked’ which made the match interesting and eventually managed to win it in the super over.

De Kock chuckles at Miller’s mishap

Interestingly the team sheet shown during the match had David Miller’s name as the designated wicketkeeper in spite of Quinton de Kock being present in the playing XI. Nobody knows whether it is experimentation for the World Cup or to give De Kock some rest ahead of the busy season. De Kock did keep wickets in the super over and dropped a catch off the first ball itself.

Miller though kept during the Lankan innings effectively. However, during one moment of the match, he let the ball slide through his legs, as he didn’t bend enough to pick it up, leaving the fielder behind him clean it up. The shot of Miller letting one through his legs was enough for De Kock to let out a chuckle, which was caught by the cameras.

Though the fumble from Miller didn’t cost South Africa, the specialist wicket-keeper must’ve felt that the ball should’ve stopped easily.

A nailbiter of a match

Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to field first. Kamindu Mendis scored a quick-fire 41 in 29 balls and with some contributions from the lower half of the batting order, Sri Lanka managed to post 134/7 in their 20 overs’ quota. Andile Phehlukwayo was the pick of the Proteas bowling with figures of 3/25.

In reply, Sri Lankan bowlers kept pegging at the South African batting lineup and kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Rassie van der Dussen made 34, Du Plessis contributed 21 and David Miller scored 41 in just 23 balls. However, the match kept the promise of being a close one as the scores ultimately ended being the same and the T20I was tied, with South Africa making 134/8.

In the Super Over, the hosts batted first and scored 14 runs off Lasith Malinga, with Miller hitting a six and a four. Imran Tahir kept the big hitter Thisara Perera quiet to win the match for his team.
