Proteas coach Ottis Gibson following South Africa’s whitewash win over Bangladesh confirmed that former pace-bowler Charl Langeveldt will not be retained as the bowling coach. Gibson interacted with the reporters at a press conference after their historic clean sweep, with an 81-run victory against the visitors.
The South African side led by Gibson was the first team to whitewash a visiting side in all formats of the game, with huge wins in all the matches. After the conclusion of the challenge, he decided who wants to continue as a part of the backroom staff for the Bangladesh series.
Langeveldt (bowling coach), Neil McKenzie (batting coach), Claude Henderson (spin bowling coach) and Adrian Birrell (assistant coach) were his support staff for Bangladesh’s tour.
However, the bowling coach Langeveldt’s contract has come to an end, and Gibson confirmed that the management would not be extending it. Further, the head coach did not confirm who will be part of the staff the next time Proteas step on the field.
But reports suggest that Birrell is expected to vacate his current role, while McKenzie is likely to be retained although the fielding and spin-bowling positions are not clear the moment.
Who will be part of the team?
“There are names at the moment. Obviously, Cricket South Africa have to make that happen. At the moment there are just names of people that I think can do a good job with the team, some overseas, some local,” Gibson said, as quoted by Cricinfo.
It is likely that Otis himself takes over the bowling coach position after having served in there for team England.
“I will do the bowling, then there will be a batting coach, a fielding coach, an assistant coach and a spin bowling coach – so four, plus myself,” he added.
Gibson’s first couple of assignments after the historic win would be the series against Zimbabwe before they take on the mighty Indian team and the Australian side who too would tough oppositions for the Proteas.
