The Women’s World Cup, 2017 has been creating a buzz all around. The global tournament is now set to receive all-encompassing social media coverage, as well. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that this global tournament will be the first ever to have its own set of Twitter emojis for the captains.
The 2017 edition of the Women’s World Cup has seen a welcome increase in public interest, owing to immense canvassing on broadcasting and social media. Former England captain, Charlotte Edwards had been rooting for this tournament to be the “biggest and best” of all time. And it looks like her prediction might well be true!
Twitter emojis
In a first ever move, Twitter has launched an emoji set for the Women’s World Cup that kicked off today in Derby, where the hosts locked horns with India. The emoji set corresponds to the captains of each team. Users can unlock and use the emojis hashtagging each of the eight captain’s name. This is a result of the co-operative initiative that the ICC and Twitter have taken together.
Apart from this, the widely popular social media platform has come up with a trophy emoji as well as a gif, that can be used with the #WW17 tag.

Widespread broadcasting
Creating history in its wake, this tournament has also become the first Women’s World Cup to have all its 31 matches to be broadcast for fans all over the world.
The ICC must have been inspired by the staggering viewership the Champions Trophy had received and would look to replicate the same for the women’s trophy quest. As per reports, the recently concluded tournament garnered 8 million unique website views, 10 million lifetime app downloads, 175 million video views and 2.57 million new followers across its social channels.
ICC Head of Media Rights (Broadcast and Digital) Aarti Dabas has said, “We believe women’s cricket offers the sport its biggest growth opportunity and this edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup will be a turning point in the women’s game.”
She also added that apart from the live streaming of the matches, clippings of the games would be uploaded on the ICC website and live scores would also be made available. This would ensure that cricket lovers would be in the thick of the action, all throughout the tournament.
Interactive initiatives by the ICC
Following the trends of the Champions Trophy success, the ICC will be continuing with the interactive Q&A sessions with players, special guests and commentators in every match. The highly successful #AskCaptain initiative will also be implemented, which will help fans all around the globe to have direct interactions with the winning captains, at the end of every match.
