Spinner Moeen Ali bags a wicket in the County Championship bowling seam

England spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali made the news when he bagged a wicket for his county Worcestershire while bowling seam up. Moeen is usually an off-break bowler, but nevertheless, the circumstances of the Division 1 game against Yorkshire demanded that he bowl medium pace. The all-rounder celebrated in style after picking up the wicket of Jack Brooks, who edged the ball to keeper Ben Cox.

Brooks departed after scoring a useful 82. At the other end, England’s Gary Ballance is still unbeaten on 189. Despite Adil Rashid’s presence in the England side, Moeen Ali has proved to be their frontline spinner. Rashid has got the odd wicket, but Moeen has made a visible impact to England’s performance, especially in the recently concluded Test series against India with both bat and ball.

Ali featured in only two Tests during the 5-match series. Making a return to the national side after a stunning double century for Worcestershire against Yorkshire, Ali instantly made a difference with the ball. He picked up 9 wickets in Southampton and also scored a useful 40. In the fifth and final Test at The Oval, he scored a half-century, and also managed to grab 3 wickets in the match.

Since making his Test debut in 2014 at Lord’s, Moeen Ali has played 52 Test matches, averaging just over 32. He’s scored 5 centuries, with a highest Test score of 155*. Moeen Ali has been selected for both the ODI and Test team that will travel to Sri Lanka. England will play the Lankans in 5 ODIs, a lone T20I and 3 Tests matches.
