Sports Minister wants to change Sri Lanka Cricket Constitution for good governance

In the recent past, Sri Lankan cricket has had a tough time both on and off the field. While the cricket team has been woefully out of form as they’ve won just one international game since October 2018, the cricket board is going through a turmoil of its own. They’ve not only been accused of the way they’ve handled things but also the procedure of appointment of the office bearers has come into question.

Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Harin Fernando revealed that he is going to present a plan to revamp the Sri Lankan cricket constitution.  He wants to change the constitution with a vision of streamlining the governance of the national board. Fernando also admitted that he has taken the help of former Sri Lankan greats in jotting down the plan. Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Sidath Wettimuny have been involved in the decision making.

Fernando said that he is going to present the plan in front of the Cabinet for approval. He will then pass the plan to the Parliament after the approval. “I will be putting it before the Cabinet next week for approval and later to the Parliament,” the Sports Minister added.

Fernando has the authority to appoint an interim committee under section 32 of the Sports Law

The voting system in use for the SLC elections has come under the scanner. Manipulation is one of the biggest reasons for criticism. The SLC elections were supposed to take place in May last year but they’ve constantly been deferred.

The international cricket body (ICC) doesn’t have the provision of political influence in the game’s administration. However, Harin Fernando met ICC’s official and took permission for the extension of the elections. He has been given a February deadline to complete the formalities. If the elections are further deferred, the Sports Minister has the authority to appoint an interim group. “I am entitled to appoint an interim committee under section 32 of the Sports Law,” Fernando said while stating the issue.
