David Warner is one of the most decorated overseas players of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His contribution to the Hyderabad based franchise has been immense over the past few years. He led the side to the title in 2016 leading them from the front with the bat. Sunrisers Hyderabad built their team around Warner and his experience makes his side the team to beat. However, they will be without the services of the Australian this year as he has been banned for a year as a sanction in the ball-tampering scandal. The BCCI refused to allow Warner and Steve Smith to take part in the league.
Chance for others to step up
The Sunrisers coach, former Aussie cricketer Tom Moody feels that Warner’s absence will test the depth of the squad and provide opportunities to other players to make their mark in the tournament. The diversity of players they have in the set up will compensate for the loss of Warner as the team looks to regain the title.
“There is very little we can do with Warner. We have to keep moving on as a team. There will be very little impact by way of Warner’s absence. We got the depth and balance thanks to the freedom in auction we got the players we wanted to be in the team,” Moody was quoted as saying by sportstarlive.com.
The former Australian vice-captain’s participation is not in the hands of the team and SRH is ready to move on and use to services of other players that they picked in the auction.
In Warner’s absence, the management has decided to appoint the New Zealander Kane Williamson as the skipper of the side. “We all know how the cricketing nations respect New Zealanders for the way they play the game. And, Kane played an important role in the last couple of seasons with us and we are glad that he is ready to step up and stand out as a leader,” Moody added.
The franchise chose to replace Warner with the explosive English opener Alex Hales. The right-handed batsman will complement the left-handed Shikhar Dhawan very well to boost the franchise’s chances of getting positive results in the tournament.
