Two teams stuck in rather precarious situations: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), will meet in the first of the two encounters in the Super-Sunday clash at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. KKR has just managed to hang in the slot of contention, although they appear to be the most vulnerable to slip out of the top-four given the way things have turned.
How often have we seen leadership changes in the middle of the tournament? One knows that the things are unsettled when one man steps back to give the other the hat of captaincy. Midway in the season, Dinesh Karthik has stepped down and handed the role to Eoin Morgan. While Karthik did so to “focus on his batting”, the fortunes for the Riders did not change despite the swapping of roles and they are coming into this clash after losing two in two, the latest of which came against the bullies Mumbai Indians.
Their batting unit fell so miserably that Pat Cummins (53 off 36) had to play the rescue act alongside the new skipper Eoin Morgan (39 from 29). After somehow managing to reach 148 in their allotted overs, KKR’s bowling unit looked completely innocuous for the majority of the innings, where Quinton de Kock’s marvelous 79 from 44 proved sufficient to take Mumbai to their 21st win over Kolkata.
On the other hand, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), much like KKR, will also enter into this came to avoid their third straight loss on the trot. Chasing a rather modest target of 168 in their last encounter against the struggling Chennai Super Kings (CSK), they fell short by a considerable margin of 20 runs.
Not quite being able to live up to the expectations despite having enough firepower with the bat and the presence of some valuable all-rounders, SRH has managed to let things slip away often and are now eyeing a troublesome road for qualification ahead. Statistically, they are very much in the tournament and can well proceed for the top-four, although they need to pull their socks up sooner than later as time is running out fast.
Pitch and conditions
The track at Abu Dhabi has been slightly two-paced and has assisted the bowlers well in the recent games. With almost all the track getting slower with time, one can expect the spinners to rule the roost in this encounter. The decision regarding what to do after the toss will be tricky as this is a day game, however, the template of batting first is not hidden from anyone.
Playing Combinations for SRH vs KKR
Sunrisers Hyderabad Probable 11
The openers have not been able to fire in tandem this year for the SRH, and that has been the most major concern for them. Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey have played their job in the middle-overs well, however, the issue begins from what follows. The team has made a number of changes in the lower-order and is yet to find the correct combination.
The bowlers for SRH have done well with Rashid Khan getting into wickets as well. T Natarajan has been a delight for the team with the ball, although Khaleel Ahmed must be cautious about his run-leaking and lack of discipline.
Probable 11- David Warner (C), Jonny Bairstow (WK), Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson, Priyam Garg, Vijay Shankar, Rashid Khan, Shahbaz Nadeem, Sandeep Sharma, T Natarajan, Khaleel Ahmed
Kolkata Knight Riders Probable 11
Shubman Gill showed some promise at the start but has not been able to carry that forward. Rahul Tripathi’s position has been as uncertain as any and he has not been given a chance to settle himself at the top of the order. With the captaincy gone to Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik would want to contribute and play more freely in the middle.
Andre Russell is a big-match player, though an inning of substance is yet to come from him. The young bowlers have shone for KKR, however, Pat Cummins has not been able to make an impression.
Probable 11- Rahul Tripathi, Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan (C), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Chris Green, Shivam Mavi, Varun Chakravarthy, Prasidh Krishna
