The resurgent Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) versus the ruthless Mumbai Indians (MI). Forty-four days ago, little did anyone know that it will bog down to this match – the last of the league stage this year – to stamp and seal the playoff contenders for the season. But, it has been that kind of a season. Messing up what should have been an easy run chase – they lost 7 for 14 needing 28 from 24, against Kings XI Punjab some 13 games ago, SRH had put themselves into a precarious situation of winning all of the three encounters to make into the playoffs. That their remaining three fixtures were against the top three sides did little help to ease the challenge.
However, the inspired Orange Army have managed to topple two of them, and face arguably the toughest of these tomorrow at Sharjah. The equation for them is simple. Win, they go to the playoffs, courtesy of their superior net run rate. Lose, straight to home. What SRH can be happy about, though, is that they are rulers of their fate – unlike their friends who have been working on calculators and have been praying for tons of permutations working their way. In another one of such eerie situations, SRH were required to win three in three in 2016, the year they ended up winning their maiden and only title too!
Although, the margin of error would be thinner than a wafer against the incredible Mumbai Indians, who sit atop the table with nine wins in thirteen fixtures. Having slammed RCB and DC in their previous encounters that too, in the absence of Rohit Sharma, the game against SRH, for MI, is nothing more than an opportunity to enter into the next stage with some momentum behind them.
While a win or loss makes no difference for Mumbai, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), led by Eoin Morgan, will be watching the clash with keen eyes and hope that SRH falter. Given that MI are set to play the first qualifier only a couple of days later, they might go a little easy and look to manage the workload. This might well be SRH’s chance to topple the toppers and break a few hearts!
Pitch and conditions
Setting a target is no more a workable strategy at Sharjah. The last five games at the venue have been won by the teams chasing. The track has slowed down considerably, and the impact of dew has been evident. Toss will, therefore, play a significant role.
Playing Combinations for SRH vs MI
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Wriddhiman Saha has effortlessly slipped into the boots of Jonny Bairstow to partner David Warner as an opener. The SRH camp has been dealing with injury concerns since the inception of the season, and eyes will be on Vijay Shankar’s fitness and availability. In his absence, Abhishek Sharma might be included as the all-rounder in the eleven.
Rashid Khan has been their trump card this year, and he would be keen to take his team ahead in the race. Jason Holder and Sandeep Sharma were impressive in the last encounter against RCB, and alongside T Natarajan, they will form the pace attack.
Probable XI– David Warner (C), Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson, Vijay Shankar/Abhishek Sharma, Jason Holder, Abdul Samad, Rashid Khan, Shahbaz Nadeem, Sandeep Sharma, T Natarajan
Mumbai Indians
With their playoff berth booked comfortably, and an all-important Qualifier coming up, MI might want to rest some players and give the ones sitting out a green signal. Chris Lynn has not gotten chances this year, and he might be given a look-in in place of Quinton de Kock. Suryakumar Yadav, Saurabh Tiwary, and stand-in captain will be on their duties, although Hardik Pandya, who has been facing some issues with his back, might miss out.
The electrifying duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult has been on fire throughout the season. MI might want to give them some rest before the big stage and try Mitchell McClenaghan in place of either Nathan Coulter-Nile or Boult, whereas Dhawal Kulkarni might get a chance if Bumrah is rested.
Probable XI- Ishan Kishan, Chris Lynn/Quinton de Kock (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Saurabh Tiwary, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard (C), Jayant Yadav, Nathan Coulter-Nile/Mitchell McClenaghan, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah/Dhawan Kulkarni
