Sri Lankan Cricket Board have appointed former fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake as the new fast bowling head coach by removing Champaka Ramanayake from the national team. Sri Lanka currently is looking to avoid an inevitable white wash in the Seagram’s Royal Stag Mega Cricket Cup as they trail the three match Test series by 2-0.

Sri Lanka lost both the Test matches by massive margins of 304 runs and an innings and 53 runs. Sri Lanka went ahead with only one seamer in the second Test at Colombo by the name of Nuwan Pradeep, who pulled his hamstring while going through his spell with the second new ball in the First innings.

As a result, the home side was rendered handicapped when it came to pace department and the visitors made full use of the absence of bowler who picked up a six wicket haul in the Galle Test. The tactics of the Lions, to go in with only when seamer was questioned by many in the cricketing fraternity.

“Sri Lanka Cricket is pleased to announce the appointment of Rumesh Ratnayake as the Head of Fast Bowling for SLC. Ratnayake will head the National Fast Bowling programme, spearheading its talent identification, skills development and training processes in cohesion with the National High-Performance plan,” stated the Sri Lankan Board according to quotations from Hindustan Times.

Lankan Board conducted motivational sessions to boost player’s morale

Rumesh Ratnayake is popularly remembered for his nine wicket haul against India back in 1985-86 as he took the Sri Lankan side victory in their inaugural Test match. Ratnayake went on to pick up 20 wickets in the series. The career of Ratnayake was curtailed due to injury as his figure of 6/66 remained his best in his career.

Sri Lankan Cricket also conducted a motivational session for the team members prior to the Third and final Test at Pallekele. The team has been at the receiving end of major criticism after their series loss against the number one Test side in the world. To boost the sagging morale of the team, former Test great Aravinda de Silva gave the pep talk and advised the team to ignore comments on social media and gossip websites and get on with the game.
