The Sri Lanka Cricket has once again appointed Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI skipper, asking Angelo Mathews, the current man in charge, to relinquish from the position. Sri Lankan cricket has been a home of catastrophic turmoils and they are hopeful that Chandimal will help them regain lost respect.

The last couple of years have not been particularly memorable for the Sri Lankan fans and things just got worse in the Asia Cup this year. They were knocked out after losing games to Afghanistan and Bangladesh, sides who they should be defeating considering the amazing history they carry.

The team looks down and out in every department. Their batsmen lack fortitude, fielding has been awful and their bowling department seems incompetent to face the likes of India, England and New Zealand. With the 2019 World Cup fast approaching, they have to do something to change their fate.

Challenging times lie ahead for Chandimal

This is not the first time Chandimal will be taking charge as the Lankan skipper. The 28-year-old from Balapitiya will be keen to not replicate what Mathews did and help his side get back on the glorious track, which certainly is a difficult job to do at this juncture.

One of the major challenges he has at this point in time is to find a settled combination. They don’t have any players in the side who have a fixed slot in the playing XI, which certainly is a disappointing stat for a side which reached the World Cup finals twice since the turn of the century (2007 and 2011).

After helping Bangladesh grow in stature, Chandika Hathurusingha was roped into the Lankan side expecting him to do something similar for his home team. But as it turns out, there has been no drastic difference in the way they have been performing post his appointment. The duo of Chandimal and Hathurusingha will now have to work relentlessly as the World Cup is less than 8 months away from commencement.
