Sri Lanka sports minister asks for report digging reason for the whitewash

It seems as if there is no end of bad times in Sri Lankan cricket. They are already getting outclassed by the Men in Blue on the field, without being able to flash a tinge of resilience. Now, they have to deal with some internal reasons and must find out the main cause for the 3-0 drubbing in the recently concluded Test series against Virat Kohli and his boys, as the Sri Lankan sports minister has asked for it.

Following the drubbing, the Lankan cricket loyalists are agitated and are questioning the chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Thilanga Sumathipala. Now, the sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera has asked for an official report scrutinizing such a poor turn up from the Lions. The chairman of selectors Sanath Jayasuriya is also facing the heat, for fielding a team that was not able to give a glimmer of hope to the fans in at least one game.

“This teams capability is not a question but we must know the reasons for the defeat. We also have to remember that India is the top team in the world, so the defeat has to be seen from that view point too,” said Jayasekara while speaking to the media after a full two-hour meeting with the officials, discussing the ‘no show’ from Chandimal‘s boys.

Sumathipala won’t be stepping down

Former Sri Lankan legend Arjuna Ranatunga demanded the resignation of Thilanga Sumathipala, but Jayasekara confirmed that it is not going to happen anytime soon. “We can’t change an elected body, that can be done only at the next election,” said Jayasekara.

“When there were interim committees which ran Sri Lanka Cricket for 8 years, no one complained. It was only this government which took action to hold elections (for the SLC),” the minister further added. He will soon sit down with the players to discuss what is going wrong and what needs to be changed, to bring back the glorious days of the roaring Lions.
