Sri Lanka v India 2017: 2nd Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights
Here we look at all the stats and records created during the opening day of the 2nd Test.
The Indian batsmen piled on the runs yet again on the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka as the Chesteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane pair amassed tons at the SSC, Colombo and powered their side to a total of 344/3 and built an unbeaten double century stand. India openers gave them a brisk start but were reduced to 133/3 shortly after lunch break but the Pujara-Rahane stand didn’t allow the home side to pull things back.
Here we look at all the stats and records created during the opening day of the 2nd Test.
1 – Cheteshwar Pujara became the first player to score centuries in each of the first three Test matches played on Sri Lankan soil.
3 – Number of centuries Pujara has scored in Tests in Sri Lanka; the joint 2nd most by any visiting player. Only Sachin Tendulkar (5) has scored more than three Test tons in the island against the hosts.
5 – Among the last seven run outs in the Indian team, Pujara has been involved in five. He got run out on two occasions while his partner had to walk back on three instances.
5 – Number of centuries in the 2nd match of a Test series for Ajinkya Rahane. He has scored 4 centuries in the remaining matches of a series. In the 2nd match of a series, Rahane has five tons and five fifties in 17 innings.
6 – Number of consecutive fifty-plus scores for KL Rahul in Test cricket; joint-most by any Indian. He equalled Gundappa Viswanath and Rahul Dravid’s record of fifty-plus scores in 6 consecutive Test innings.
7 – Cheteshwar Pujara is now the 7th Indian player to score a century in the 50th Test of his career. The last one to do so was Virat Kohli.
10 – Number of consecutive Test matches before this match at Colombo (SSC), where Sri Lanka won the toss. The last time they lost the toss at this venue was in December 2007 against England.
18 – Ajinkya Rahane’s century in this game is his first Test century in 18 innings. His last century in Test cricket came in 2016 at Indore against New Zealand where he scored 188.
84 – Number of innings Pujara took to complete 4000 runs in Test cricket; the joint 3rd fewest by any Indian. He stands alongside Rahul Dravid who also needed 84 innings for the 4000-run milestone.
833 – Partnership runs between Pujara and Rahane in the last 9 innings in Test cricket; both have been involved in four 100-run stands and 2 fifty-run stands including the unbeaten 211 in this game. In the first 8 innings as a pair in Tests, the duo had 104 runs together at an average of 13 with the best of 37.
