India posted a huge total of 622/9 in their first innings as three Indians managed to hit fifties on the 2nd day of the Colombo (SSC) Test against Sri Lanka. Ravichandran Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha and Ravindra Jadeja hit half centuries to help India get over 600 runs on the board yet again. Sri Lanka lost both their openers for 50 runs in the 20 overs of the 2nd day’s play as Ashwin bagged both the wickets.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

3 – Sri Lankan spinners Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Malinda Pushpakumara conceded over 100 runs in the first innings. This is the 3rd instance where three Sri Lankan spinners conceded 100 and more in a single Test inning. 2004 Test at Galle vs Australia and the 2009 Kanpur Test vs India are the other two instances.

4 – Number of Indians including Ravichandran Ashwin who have scored 2000 runs and picked 200 wickets in Tests. Overall, he is the 19th player to achieve this double while 15 of those including Ashwin have picked up 250 and more wickets.

4 – Number of 600+ totals for India in 2017; the joint-most number of 600+ totals for a team in Test cricket. India only had 4 such totals in 2007.

6 – Number of fifty-plus scores in the Indian innings; the joint-most by them in a Test innings outside home. India had 6 scores of fifty and more at The Oval in 2007.

6 – India’s six fifty-plus scores in first innings are the most in a Test inning on Sri Lanka soil. Previously there were 13 instances of 5 fifty-plus scores in an innings in Sri Lanka.

6 – This is the 6th 600+ total under Virat Kohli’s captaincy; no other captain has had as many as six totals of 600+ in Test cricket.

8 – The Indian team’s score of 600+ in consecutive matches is the 8th instance of a team scoring 600+ in back to back Tests. This was the 5th time the Indian team has managed something like that. They are the only team to score 600+ in three consecutive Tests as well.

10 – Number of players who have scored fifty-plus scores in this series for India; the joint 2nd most for India in a Test series. 12 players hit at least one fifty-plus scores in 1982/83 series vs Pakistan while 10 players each have scored fifty and more vs England in 1961-62 and in Sri Lanka, 2015.

24 – India’s 3rd wicket stand of 24 is the lowest partnership stand for them in the first innings. This is the 2nd best “lowest partnership” in a Test inning. Australia had the lowest of 27 vs England in 1928 at Sydney while West Indies had 23 vs England in 1986. These are the only three instances in Test cricket where all the wickets had 20+ stands in a Test inning.

156 – Runs conceded by Malinda Pushpakumara in the first innings; the 5th most by a Sri Lankan bowler in an innings on Test debut and the joint 15th most by anyone.
