Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced the 15-man squad for the one-off T20I against England which is scheduled to take place on October 27. Thisara Perera has been once again appointed the captain of the side despite the presence of Dinesh Chandimal, the ODI skipper, in the line-up. However, the major omissions from the side are Upul Tharanga, who was the leading run-getter in domestic T20 tournament, and Man of the tournament Danushka Gunathilaka which is surprising.
The island nation has continued to struggle in the limited-overs format of the game after the Asia Cup as well. They’ve lost yet another ODI series at home, this time to England, with one game still to go. All the matches in the series have been affected due to rain so far and the fifth and final game will be played on Tuesday as the hosts will hope to make it 3-1 in the series.
Kamindu Mendis earns a call-up
The young 20-year-old Kamindu Mendis has earned a maiden call-up to the team who has played only 6 T20s and the same number of List A matches. Interestingly, Kusal Perera has made it to the squad after being ruled out of the ODI series due to the hamstring injury. It remains to be seen if he is completely fit to make it to the playing XI. Niroshan Dickwella has impressed the selectors with his form in the ODI series as the left-hander has managed to make a cut in the team.
Isuru Udana has been rewarded a place in the side for his excellent show in the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) where he was awarded the best bowler of the tournament. He ended the season as the highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets to his name in eight appearances at an exceptional average of 14.41. Lasith Malinga has also made a comeback after a stunning comeback to the 50-overs format. Angelo Mathews has been dropped from the T20I squad as well.
Sri Lanka will be hoping to turn things around ahead of the ICC World Cup next year and they will take victory in any format to gain momentum at the moment.
