Sri Lankan Women have been found guilty of slow over rate in the recently concluded match against India in the round robin league of ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup of 2017. Indian Women won the match by a margin of 16 runs and thereby continued to march on in the ongoing competition with their fourth consecutive win in the World Cup.

The Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, Richie Richardson, imposed the sanction on Inoka Ranaweera’s side. According to the ruling, the Sri Lankans were one over short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

As of now, there exists no financial penalty on the Sri Lankan players according to Appendix 3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. However, if the Lankans commit the same error again, their captain Ranaweera might face one match suspension for violating the second minor over-rate offence.

Langton Rusere and Chris Brown are the two onfield umpires responsible for laying down the charges on the Sri Lanka. Gregory Brathwaite and Shaun George were the third umpires and reserve umpire respectively. The next task for the Indian Women’s team in the World Cup is against South Africa on July 8. Subsequently, the Sri Lankan Women play the West Indies the next day.

India now has defeated England, Pakistan, West Indies, and Sri Lanka in the round robin league round. Parallelly, the Southern Stars too have won all their matches in the tournament, thereby, top the table at the moment, due to higher net run-rate. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and West Indies have lost all their matches and therefore are languishing at the bottom of the table. As of now, it is a race between the White Ferns and the Proteas for the fourth spot as England are expected to seal the third spot. Top four teams qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.
