David Warner takes an extra run after ball deflects off his thigh pad
The instance took place in 19th over of the game.
Australia registered victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20I by a big margin of 134 runs at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday. David Warner won the Man of the Match award for his astonishing century. It was the first T20I that he played for Australia after coming out of the ban imposed on him by Cricket Australia.
The hosts showed utter dominance over the visitors throughout the match. Warner scored 100* in 56 balls, followed by Aaron Finch (64 in 36 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (62 in 28 balls). In bowling, Adam Zampa was the star registering the bowling figures of 3/14. Australia posted a mammoth total of 233 runs for the loss of two wickets and in return, the whole Sri Lankan team could only muster 99 runs in 20 overs.
Ball deflects after hitting David Warner’s thigh pad; he takes an extra run
The instance that lit up a small controversy happened in 19th over when Maxwell played the last delivery of the over for a single. Warner reached the striker’s end and while he was standing near the keeper, a cheeky throw from the fielder hit his thigh and got deflected. Then he ran for another single that offered him the opportunity to play the final over in order to complete his century. It was a big moment for the Aussie opener, who was batting on 92.
In the next over, the left-handed batter scored a boundary on the very first ball of the final over and completed his century on the last delivery of the Australian innings. He also became the third player from his country, after Glenn Maxwell and Shane Watson, to score a century in all three formats of cricket.
The explosive opener David Warner looked in top-notch form during the first T20I, after a poor show with the bat during the Ashes series. He scored 95 runs in the whole Ashes 2019 series in England but he smashed 100* in only one T20I inning. The second T20I of the series will be played at The Gabba on 30th October.
