Star India keen on introducing Virtual Reality in IPL 2018
VR headsets would be given to random spectators at the stands and to selected Hotstar subscribers.

If things go as per the plan of Star India, then the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) could see the Virtual Reality being a part of it. VR is the emerging trend in the world of technology and has not been seen in use in any of the cricket tournaments before. Hence, if the broadcasters manage to pull it off for the coveted T20 league, then it could well be a historic first in the sport.
As per the recent reports in IndianTelevision.com, the Star India are keen on pressing for the same. The broadcaster, in association with OTT service provider Hotstar, is finding ways to make use of Virtual Reality in the IPL next year. This will enhance the viewing experience of the fans for the most popular league in the world. The revelations about the same were made at ’10 Media Transformations for 2018 and Beyond’ session at the CII Big Picture Summit 2017.
The Consumer and the Revenue Head of Hotstar, Mr. Prabh Singh, tried to give a sneak peek about the innovations that the broadcasters are thinking of for the IPL 2018. When NDTV Consulting editor Vikram Chandra asked him about the Star India pondering the inclusion of VR in the tournament, the former answered in affirmation.
VR headsets to be given away
According to the reports, the VR headsets will be given out to the random spectators at the venues. Also, some selected Hotstar subscribers would also be given these headsets to enjoy the action in the most unique way. The organizers admitted that supplying of headsets needs some planning when it comes to the logisitical issues. They are working on the same.
Moreover, the organizers are also pondering the opportunity to tie up with a brand that would supply these headsets. All these discussions would be done in the coming days. For now, one can only expect some big changes coming in the viewership experience in the IPL 2018.
