Nottinghamshire and Somerset played each other in the quarter-final game of the Royal London One-Day Cup at the County Ground in Taunton where both the sides scored over 400 as a total of 834 runs were scored in the 98 overs at the cost of 19 wickets in the match. Nottinghamshire were successful in defending their total of 429/9; their 2nd highest List A total ever by bowling out Somerset for 405, who also recorded their 2nd highest total in this format.

After being put in to bat, Nottinghamshire got a blistering start from their openers as Riki Wessels hit 4 sixes in his innings of 81 that he scored in just 62 balls while Michael Lumb struck 47 off mere 28 balls. Samit Patel also scored 69-ball 66 but the former Zimbabwe skipper, Brendon Taylor was the backbone for the Notts as he hit his maiden List A 150 scoring 154 in just 97 balls with help of 17 fours and 5 sixes.

The visiting side could add only 19 runs in last 15 balls as they lost 5 wickets in that period. If not for those wickets, Nottinghamshire could have gone past their highest List A total of 445/8 last year against Nottinghamshire, 2nd highest List A total ever. This was the first time that Somerset have conceded 400+ total in the List A as the previous highest total in this format over them was 383/4 by Kent in 2014 at the same County Ground in Taunton.

In the chase, opener Johann Myburgh hit 19-ball 44 before Somerset lost 3 wickets in quick succession. However, it was the pair of Dean Elgar and Peter Trego that changed the course of the game with some exceptional hitting as they shared a 154-run stand for the 4th wicket in just 16 overs before Trego fell for 66 off 47 and Elgar was dismissed for 91 from 63 balls in space of 3 overs.

By then Somerset was cursing at 9 an over but unsubstantial contributions from the following batsmen meant they were 9 down for 364 in the 44th over. However, Jamie Overton, who came to bat at No.10, scored 40 off just 26 balls to keep them alive in the game but couldn’t take his side to the semis.

Overall, this was the 3rd time Nottinghamshire and Somerset have posted 400+ in List A cricket, the most by any England domestic side. Among the domestic sides across the globe, only New Zealand’s Central Districts (5 totals) has scored 400+ in List A cricket more times than these two teams. South Africa’s domestic side Titans also has 3 totals of 400+.
