The year 2018 has been a momentous one for Afghanistan as they made their Test debut and also featured in their 100th match in the ODI format. However, both the games didn’t fetch convincing results for the Afghans as they were rolled out inside two days in the one-off Test against India and went down fighting to Ireland in the 2nd ODI of the series on Wednesday. Tim Murtagh’s opening burst reduced Afghans to 16/4 before they bounced back to finish on 182/9 in their 50 overs.
The hosts were cruising in the chase as Andrew Balbirnie’s 60 and Paul Stirling’s 39 put them at 144/4. However, Rashid Khan made unsuccessful efforts at breaking the back of the opposition with 3/37 in his ten overs. But Simi Singh’s unbeaten 40 took Ireland over the line with three wickets in hand and 6.1 overs to spare. This game was also the 100th ODI of Mohammad Nabi’s career as the all-rounder featured in every game Afghanistan played so far. Thus, he is now the first player to feature in each of a country’s first 100 ODI matches.
Afghanistan are now the 14th country to feature in a ton of ODI matches. Seven countries won their 100th ODI game while six including the Afghans lost their milestone match. Kenya’s 100th game in the One-Day Internationals was a washout. The Afghanistan team has won 52 matches out of their first 100 ODIs and lost in 46. West Indies (77), South Africa (55) and England (54) are the other teams to have won 50 matches among their first 100 ODIs.
The mighty Australian side won only 45 in their first 100 ODI matches and stand at No.6 in this list. Among the five Asian countries to feature in 100 ODIs, they are the other team to win more than fifty matches in their first 100. Pakistan and India won 42 and 40 matches respectively among their first 100 ODI matches. Bangladesh are the only team to win less than 20 games in their first 100 ODIs as they won only six matches.
