Aiden Markram and Farhaan Behardien stitched on a record partnership for the Multiply Titans on Friday in the Momentum One-Day Cup. Playing against the Cape Cobras at the Newlands, the Titans were reduced to 31/5 by 13th over after losing the toss. Rory Kleinveldt’s opening spell included three wickets and four maiden overs. Akhona Mnyaka picked a couple too as the South African Internationals Heinrich Klaasen, Theunis de Bruyn and Dean Elgar collectively scored only 12 runs.
Markram and Behardien carried on the rescue act that too at a good pace. The duo added 59 runs between 21st and 30th overs as Titans reached 109/5. They put on 74 more runs in the next ten overs with Markram scoring 45 runs from 30 balls during that period. The young batsman went crazy in the final ten overs as he raced to a 129-ball 169 by scoring 69 runs in his last 27 balls. He shared a 272-run partnership in 36.3 overs with Behardien before getting out in the last over.
Markram hit 15 fours and seven sixes during his 3rd 150+ score in the One-Day Cup. Farhaan also scored a century and finished on an unbeaten 111 off 100 balls. Their stand helped the Titans recover from a dubious start and finish on 320/6 in their 50 overs. The partnership of 272 is now the highest for the 6th wicket in List A cricket. They surpassed the record held by New Zealand pair of Grant Elliott and Luke Ronchi with an unbeaten 267-run stand against Sri Lanka in an ODI in 2015.
Highest partnerships for the 6th wicket in List A cricket:
The current umpire Nigel Llong and Matthew Fleming held the 6th wicket record stand for nearly 16 years as they added 226 runs in 1999. Elliott and Ronchi nearly broke their own record in 2015 during the tour of England. Facing the Leicestershire in the warm-up game, the duo shared an unbeaten 221-run stand for the 6th wicket. Markram-Behardien’s 272-run stand is also the highest for the 5th or lower wicket in the List A cricket.
