Stats: Angelo Mathews bags his first duck in 84 innings in Test cricket
This was Angelo Mathews' 2nd duck in the 121 innings he has batted in Test cricket.
In an eventful day where Hardik Pandya broke quite a few batting records with a quickfire ton, he starred with the ball to dismiss Angelo Mathews for a duck, which was a crucial point in bowling out the hosts in less than two sessions. The wicket gained more value as it was Mathews’ first duck in Test cricket in his last 84 innings.
Mathews last bagged a duck in Tests against Pakistan in 2012. With this duck, his streak of 83 innings without a duck came to an end and so his chances of setting new records with a longer streak. David Gower holds the record as he played 119 consecutive innings without scoring a duck in Tests. He, in fact, is the only player without a duck for 100 consecutive Test innings.
Sachin Tendulkar came close to the record but at the point of his retirement, he played 91 consecutive innings without a duck and ended up at third on the list. For Sri Lanka, Kumar Sangakkara holds the record as the former left-handed keeper-batsman played 85 consecutive innings without a duck, two more than Mathews’ streak.
