Ashton Turner is having a torrid time since his match-winning knock against India that set up an ODI series win for Australia. Turner was benched during the 5-match ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE and also missed a spot in the World Cup squad with the return of big names. The 26-year-old joined the Rajasthan Royals for his maiden stint at the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Ashton made his debut against the Kings XI Punjab in Mohali, the same venue where he smacked an unbeaten 84 against India. However, three games into the tournament, he is yet to score a run and has been dismissed on the very first ball he faced in all three innings thus far. He holed out trying to score quickly in the games against KXIP and Delhi Capitals while Jasprit Bumrah pinned him in front in another game.
Players with three consecutive ducks in the IPL:
Thus, Turner became only the 6th player to bag ducks in three consecutive innings in the IPL. None of the previous five players had ducks in their first three matches/innings like Turner. Shardul Thakur is only other to have three successive golden ducks in the IPL. In fact, Turner registered ducks in his previous two outings in the Twenty20 format before this tournament.
In the Perth Scorchers’ last league game of BBL 2018-19, Turner bagged a golden duck against Adelaide Strikers. Later, during the tour of India, the right-handed batsman got cleaned up for a 5-ball duck during the Vizag T20I. By registering ducks in each of his previous five innings in the Twenty20 format, Ashton Turner became the first such player in the history of the Twenty20 format.
Ducks in most consecutive innings in the Twenty20 format:
As many as ten players prior to Turner bagged ducks in four consecutive Twenty20 innings but none of them went on to have five in a succession. Among the 11 players with four and more consecutive T20 ducks, Turner and Dom Michael is the other player from Australia. Michael, who featured in a grand total of four matches in his Twenty20 career that was spread between 2013 and 2016, bagged a duck in all those four games.
