Stats: Both captains scoring centuries in an ODI

Team India created history when they locked horns against South Africa in the first ODI of their tour of 2018. The thumping win was their first ever win at the Kingsmead, Durban. Also, it was their highest successful chase on the South African soil against the Proteas. The chief architect of their win was their captain, Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli is revered as the chase master of the modern day cricket. In fact, some pundits, including a former England cricketer reckon that he is the greatest chaser in the history of ODI cricket. Earlier in the match, South African skipper Faf du Plessis had also scored a fighting century to take his team to a par total at the competitive surface.

Interestingly, this was not the first instance when both captains scored centuries in the same ODI fixture. This was the fourth instance in the ODI history when two captains from either of the sides notched up tons in the same match. The first instance of this had come back in the year 2013 when England had taken on Ireland at Dublin.

Irish skipper William Porterfield had scored 112 in the match and English skipper Eoin Morgan had scored an unbeaten 124 in the game. Incidentally, the game was an emotional one for Morgan, who was playing against his home nation, Ireland. It is also worth noting that out of the four such instances when both captains have scored centuries in the same match, Virat Kohli features in three of those.

The second instance of both captains scoring hundreds in the same match came at Fatullah in 2014. Virat had scored 136 in the match and Mushfiqur Rahim had piled on a competitive 117. Kohli’s knoc had helped India chase 279 in the match.

About 9 months later, in the same year, India took on Sri Lanka at Ranchi. The two captains for the match, Virat Kohli and Angelo Mathews, scored identical unbeaten 139 in the match. Kohli’s unbeaten knock had guided India home in that match as well.
