Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been in a rampaging form in the recent times. The dynamic Indian middle-order batsman is undoubtedly the batting mainstay of the national side across the three formats of the game. Kohli has made it a habit to score centuries at will in the ODI format. Recently, he hit his 34th ODI ton during the 3rd ODI against South Africa at the Newlands, Cape Town.
He is now next to only legendary former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar in the list of cricketers with most tons in the ODI history. Also, with his majestic ton in Cape Town, Virat Kohli surpassed Sourav Ganguly’s tally of 11 tons as the captain of the Indian cricket team. Now, Kohli has 12 ODI tons as the captain of the Indian side in 46 matches – the most number of tons by a cricketer as the captain of the Indian team.
Interestingly, he sits at the third spot in the list of cricketers with most centuries as an ODI captain. The list is topped by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Ponting, who successfully led Australia to two World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007 during his time as the Australian captain, has scored 22 centuries in 230 matches as the leader of his side.
He is followed by AB de Villiers, who had mustered 13 tons in 103 matches as the captain of the South African national side. Sourav Ganguly, the iconic captain who Virat Kohli overtook in this list, had scored 11 tons in 147 outings as the Indian captain. Another interesting name that features in the list is Ireland’s William Porterfield, who has scored 8 tons as the Irish captain.
It is worth noting that only five cricketers have scored 10 or more than 10 centuries as the captain of the side in the ODI cricket. Also, Virat Kohli seems to be the one as the most effective in the list. Kohli has 13 centuries in 46 matches, which roughly equates to less than three games per century.
