Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin have stood out as the pillars of the Indian Test side and played a key role in their unprecedented success in the last two years in the longer format. While Pujara failed to establish a mark in the limited-overs team and has been a Test specialist while Ashwin’s credentials in the shorter forms have been downgraded over the last couple of years but he has continued to touch new highs as far as the Test cricket is concerned.
While Ashwin just played his 50th game in the first Test at Galle while the 2nd Test at Colombo SSC will be the Test No.50 for Pujara. In the 49 Test matches so far, the Indian No.3 has amassed 3966 runs. Among the Indian players who have played 50 Tests, only Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag have scored over 4000 runs at end of their 50th Test match. If Pujara has a similar game at the SSC like he had at Galle, he can finish behind Gavaskar with the most runs scored by an Indian after 50 Tests.
Only Gavaskar (20) and Virat Kohli (14) have scored more centuries than Pujara (12) in the first 50 Tests of their career. Pujara has been dismissed for a duck only three times in his career so far; the 2nd fewest ducks among Indians who played 49 Test matches behind Rahul Dravid (2 ducks).
