Stats: Cheteshwar Pujara completes 4000 runs in Test cricket
He became the 15th Indian and the 126th player overall to complete 4000 Test runs.
Cheteshwar Pujara reached a new milestone by featuring in the 2nd Test match against Sri Lanka at the Colombo (SSC) as this game is the 50th of his Test career. He made the important game even more special by scoring an unbeaten century on the first day. In this process, he completed 4000 runs in the Test cricket. Thus he became the 15th Indian and the 126th player overall to complete 4000 Test runs.
The first innings of the Test was Pujara’s 84th innings in Test cricket and thus became the joint 3rd fastest Indian to reach the 4000-run milestone. Virender Sehwag took 79 innings while Sunil Gavaskar had to bat for 81 innings to complete 4000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid played 84 innings to score 4000 Test runs; exactly the number Pujara took. Sehwag in fact needed 81 innings for scoring 4000 Test runs for India as he played a Test for the World XI against Australia in 2005.
Pujara walked out to bat after a quick start from Shikhar Dhawan with 3966 runs in his Test career, completed the 4000-run milestone when he reached the individual score of 37. He is also the 4th Indian to have scored over 4000 runs in the first 50 Tests of his career; the other three are Gavaskar, Sehwag and Dravid. Pujara has a chance to catch up with Dravid (4135) and Sehwag (4103) as he is only 60 runs away from getting past both as he has scored 4075 runs thus far as he is batting unbeaten on 109 on day 1 of the SSC Test. However, Gavaskar is way out of the reach with 4947 runs.
