The Windies team took the confidence from the Test series victory at least with the bat as they posted a record total batting first in the first ODI against England. Chris Gayle anchored the Windies innings with a 129-ball 135 that included three fours and 12 sixes. Gayle’s hitting made the umpire find a new ball as six of his maximums sent the ball out of the stadium. The Windies smashed a record 23 sixes on their way to their highest ODI total at home of 360/8 in their 50 overs.

Here are all the records and numbers created by Chris Gayle and the Windies during the first innings:

3 – This game witnessed the 3rd instance of Chris Gayle hitting 10 or more sixes in an ODI inning. He hit 16 sixes against Zimbabwe in the 2015 CWC game and 11 during the last year’s CWC qualifier game against UAE.

He thus became the first player to hit 10+ sixes in an ODI inning on three different instances. AB de Villiers, Martin Guptill and Rohit Sharma had two such instances each.

12 – Chris Gayle became the first player to hit ten or more sixes in an ODI inning against England. Gayle’s 8 sixes during his 43-ball 80 also at the Bridgetown in 2009 were the previous most number of sixes against England in an ODI inning by any player.

23 – The 23 sixes hit by the Windies batsmen in this game are the most by any team in an ODI inning. They went past New Zealand’s 22 sixes during the 2014 Queenstown ODI against the Windies team only.

57 – Gayle’s 57 sixes in ODI cricket against England are the most by any player while facing the Brits. Gayle was levelled with Brendon McCullum on 45 ODI sixes vs England before this game.

100 – Chris Gayle became the first player to hit as many as 100 sixes in International cricket against a particular opposition. Gayle’s 12th and last six of the game was his 100th across formats against England. He hit 15 in Tests, 57 in ODIs and 28 sixes in T20Is against England thus far.

Coming into the game, Gayle’s 88 sixes vs England were the 2nd most by any player against an opponent in Internationals only behind Rohit Sharma’s 89 against Australia. Rohit surpassed Gayle during the ODI series in Australia last month only.

222 – The Windies batsmen aggregated 222 runs via boundaries during their total of 360/8; the most number of runs they scored in an ODI through fours and sixes. Their previous highest number of runs coming via boundaries was 218 runs against New Zealand in the 2014 Hamilton ODI and against UAE during the last year’s CWC Qualifier.

360/8 – Windies’ total of 360/8 is their highest ODI total at home surpassing the 338/7 against Bangladesh in the 2014 Basseterre ODI. Overall, this is their joint 3rd highest total in ODIs. Windies scored 372/2 against Zimbabwe in the 2015 CWC and 363/4 against New Zealand in the 2014 Hamilton ODI. They also posted 360/4 against Sri Lanka during the 1987 CWC game.

488 – Gayle’s 488 sixes in International cricket are the most by any player as he went past Shahid Afridi’s record tally of 476 sixes. Gayle needed only one six to claim the record but ended up hitting 12.
