Stats: Chris Gayle smashes a 97-ball 162 in the 4th ODI against England

On his comeback to International cricket after nearly six months, Chris Gayle has scored his second hundred from three matches in the home ODI series against England. Gayle struck 162 from only 97 deliveries with 11 fours and 14 sixes to keep his team alive in the big chase of 419 runs. His 176-run stand with Darren Bravo and a 69-run partnership with Jason Holder put the Windies on top. The hosts ended up conceding a 1-2 lead to England as they losing the game by 29 runs.

14 – Gayle hit as many as 14 sixes during this knock. This is the 4th time he has smashed ten or more sixes in an ODI inning while no other batsman has done that more than twice.
30 – Chris Gayle’s 30 sixes from three innings in this series are the most by any player in any ODI series/tournament. Gayle broke his own record which he set during the 2015 World Cup by smashing 26 sixes including a record 16 in the game against Zimbabwe.
The previous highest number of sixes hit by a player in a bilateral ODI series was 23 sixes by India’s Rohit Sharma across six innings in the home series against Australia in 2013.
55 – Gayle brought up his century from 55 balls in this game which is the 2nd fastest known ODI century for the Windies. Brian Lara scored a 45-ball hundred against Bangladesh in 1999, the fastest ODI hundred for them.
55 – The 55-ball century is also the 2nd fastest to be on the losing side in ODIs. Jonny Bairstow had a 54-ball century during England’s defeat to Scotland last year.
75 – Gayle’s 75 ODI sixes from 32 innings against England are the most by any player against an opponent in this format. Gayle surpassed Rohit Sharma’s 66 ODI sixes in 31 innings against the Australians.
85 – Gayle’s 85-ball 150 is the joint 4th fastest 150 in ODI cricket. Jos Buttler’s 76-ball effort features 2nd list in the fastest ODI 150s list. For the Windies, the previous fastest was off 107 balls by Denesh Ramdin against Bangladesh in 2014.
This is also the fastest 150 in an ODI defeat as the previous fastest was off 99 balls by Ricky Ponting in the 2006 Johannesburg ODI against South Africa.
133 – Number of sixes for Gayle in the Caribbean Islands; the most by any player in a country in this format. He went past Brendon McCullum’s record of 126 ODI sixes in New Zealand.
162 – Chris Gayle’s 162 is the highest individual score in an ODI chase for the Windies. Brian Lara’s 153 in the 1992 Sharjah ODI is the only other 150+ score for the Windies in ODI chases.
The 162 by Gayle is also the 2nd highest in an ODI defeat for the Windies. Evin Lewis was retired hurt on 176 during the 2017 ODI also against England in a rain-affected game.
500 – Chris Gayle became the first player to hit 500 sixes in International cricket. He is also the 2nd player to hit more than 300 ODI sixes after Shahid Afridi.
4000 – Gayle is only the 2nd Windies player and overall the 14th to aggregate 10,000 runs in the ODI format. He is also the first player from Windies to score over 4000 ODI runs at home venue.
