Stats: Chris Gayle's Twenty20 career in numbers
It was a mind-boggling achievement by Chris Gayle who went on to become the first cricketer in the history of T20 cricket to accumulate 10,000 runs while appearing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in yesterday’s match against the Gujarat Lions. The southpaw was under severe pressure to perform prior to this match and boy he responded in the best of fashions.
He roared back to form with a 38 balls 77 which included 5 fours and 7 gigantic sixes. It was entertainment at it’s best as the big Caribbean batsman made light work of the GL bowlers. He brought up many records during his innings and some of them are listed below.
1 – Chris Gayle became the first player ever to complete the 10000 runs in each of the three formats (FC, List A and T20).
4 – Number of players including Chris Gayle who has carried their bat through in Twenty20 cricket. He remained unbeaten on 63 despite West Indies bowled out for just 101 vs Sri Lanka in 2009 WT20 semis. He is the only one to carry the bat in T20Is.
6 – Number of consecutive calendar years since 2011 in which Chris Gayle has scored 1000 or more runs in Twenty20s. In overall, no player has managed to score over 1000 runs in a calendar year more than 3 times.
12 – Balls taken by Chris Gayle for his fifty for Melbourne Renegades against Adelaide Strikers in 2016, the joint fastest in Twenty20s and the joint fastest recorded fifty across all formats. He equalled Yuvraj Singh’s 12-ball fifty (vs England in 2007).
