David Warner’s consistency in the IPL seems to be unmatchable as he registered his 8th fifty-plus score across 10 innings in this season for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Taking on the Chennai Super Kings, Warner scored 57 off 45 balls with three fours and two sixes. Manish Pandey came and played the aggressor’s role in the 2nd wicket partnership of 115 runs between them. Warner has now amassed 574 runs this season at an average of 71.75; while no other player has scored more than 450 runs yet.
A night after Ashton Turner became the first player with five consecutive fifty-plus scores in the Twenty20 format, his fellow Australian, David Warner became the 5th player with fifty-plus scores in five straight Twenty20 innings. Warner is also the first player from Australia to hit five consecutive fifty-plus scores. Warner’s streak began against the Kings XI Punjab in Mohali where he scored an unbeaten 70.
He followed it with 51, 50, and 67 respectively against Delhi Capitals, CSK and KKR; all three in Hyderabad. Warner is also the 3rd player to score five consecutive fifty-plus scores in the IPL. Virender Sehwag achieved this feat in 2012 while playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). Jos Buttler replicated it during the 2018 edition after being promoted as the opener by the Rajasthan Royals.
The other two players with five 50+ scores in a succession in Twenty20 cricket are Hamilton Masakadza in 2012 and Kamran Akmal in 2017. Masakadza recorded it while playing for Zimbabwe national team and the Zimbabwe XI team. Kamran had a streak during the 2017 Domestic T20 Cup for the Lahore Whites. This 57-run knock was also the 5th successive fifty for Warner in the IPL against the Chennai Super Kings.
Warner is the only player to hit five or more consecutive fifty-plus scores in the IPL against opposition and he has done it against three different opponents. The left-hander had seven consecutive fifties against RCB between 2014 and 2016. Warner also scored the fifties in each of his previous seven IPL innings against KXIP.
