Deepak Chahar created history in the third and final T20 International against Bangladesh in Nagpur. It was also the series decider which the Rajasthan pacer dominated with his bowling and registered best figures for a bowler in Men’s T20Is. Chahar returned with the magical figures of 6/7 in 3.2 overs as India bundled out Bangladesh for 144 defending 174 to win the series by 2-1.
The hosts went in with a specialist bowler short for this game and put more onus on Deepak Chahar who delivered for them. The pacer first bowled the third over of the innings and nipped out Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar off consecutive deliveries. Rohit Sharma then brought him back in the 13th over with Mohammad Naim and Mohammad Mithun going great guns.
The 98-run partnership almost took the game away from India but Deepak Chahar struck at the perfect time dismissing the latter. That wicket triggered a sensational collapse for Bangladesh and by the time Chahar came back for his last spell in the 18th over, the result of the match was inconsequential. But there were wickets to take for him and he nailed his variations to perfection.
The 27-year-old sent back Aminul Islam, Shafiul Islam and Mustafizur Rahman off consecutive deliveries to pick a hat-trick on his way to register best figures in the T20Is.
Deepak Chahar goes past Ajantha Mendis
Deepak Chahar, after his heroics in the third T20I against Bangladesh, went past Ajantha Mendis who held the record earlier for more than seven years. The Sri Lankan mystery spinner had registered the figures of 6/8 in his four overs against Zimbabwe on 18 September 2012. Mendis had then broken his own record of 6/16 against Australia in August 2011.
India’s Yuzvendra Chahal is also part of this list with the fourth-best figures ever in the shortest format of the game at the highest level. He had ripped apart England’s batting line-up at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru back in February 2017.
The other bowlers to have taken five-wicket hauls and make it to this list are Rangana Herath and Rashid Khan who achieved their respective feats against New Zealand and Ireland respectively. However, Deepak Chahar has managed to go past all of them and tops the charts now with his superb bowling in Nagpur.
