Stats: Most dismissals as a wicketkeeper in ODI cricket

Veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni reached yet another milestone in his illustrious career. Dhoni pocketed his 400th dismissal in ODIs during the third ODI against South Africa at the Newlands, Cape Town, recently. The former Indian cricketer reached the milestone number when he stumped the stand-in South African captain Aiden Markram off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav in the match.

MS Dhoni went on to pocket another catch in the game. He now has 401 dismissals to his name in 310 outings. This includes 295 catches and 106 stumpings. He is currently placed at number four in the list of wicketkeepers with most dismissals in ODI cricket. The list is topped by former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara has 482 dismissals to his name in 353 innings.

Sanga’s feat includes 383 catches to go along with 99 dismissals. Next in line is legendary former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. Gilchrist had inflicted 472 dismissals in his 281 outings in the Australian jersey in the ODI cricket. He pocketed a record number of catches – 417 – the most by any cricketer till date in ODI cricket history. Also, he had 55 stumpings to go with it.

Former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher has 424 dismissals to his credit in 290 matches. His numbers include 402 catches and just 22 stumpings. There are two Pakistani wicketkeepers in the list of top 10 wicketkeepers with most dismissals in ODI cricket. They are Moin Khan and Rashid Latif with 209 and 164 dismissals respectively. Commenting on the number of stumpings, MS Dhoni leads the race with a record 106 stumpings to his name.

No wonder why Dhoni is revered as one of the modern day masters of the game. He is also hailed as the best cricketer in the current world scenario. Dhoni is renowned for his lightning quick stumpings. A small error from the batsman and Dhoni latches on to it in a flash. It is worth noting that in this particular list of top 10 wicketkeepers with most ODI dismissals, Dhoni is the only active cricketer – rest all have already retired from the game. Hence, he has no competition at the moment.
